I saw Jane Fonda on Oprah while home on holiday break. She talked about putting your Life in Review, a 3-act play. Act 1 is years 0-30, II years 31-59, III 60+. It got me to thinking about my life, I took a long walk today and thought about different things. I recalled on the Oprah interview Fonda claimed 1 in 3 women are sexually abused as children. Suddenly I remembered an assault on myself at about age 10, in a public restroom with my parents waiting outside. I am the 1 in the 3.
I can honestly say that I don't think my body abuse or drug use when I was in my 20's is any left over guilt from the attack. My parents made it clear to me that I was an innocent victim, filing charges with the State Police, etc. I almost never recall it, it was the association with the interview that brought it up.

water in my ear
every week, a different drama
this morning teaching class I got my right ear filled up with water, now it's like I'm walking in a fog, sometimes I can hear and the rest of the time it is just muffled noise. always something

one thing after another
Ok, so the hand is finally healing up, just a tiny scab and scar left over so guess what, the first week of school, first day of classes to teach and who goes down with a UTI and a nasty one too? Still going to the bathroom every half hour but the terrible ab pains and bloating are passed, thank goodness for modern medicine.

now it is my hand
Well i get the blue ribbon for dumb award. Monday 8/2 I was pushing a cart through a doorway and didn't allow enough room for my two hands, so the left one got jammed into the doorway with a painful sprain in my index joint and then the next day, I ran a pair of scissors into the same hand!
Well, the scissors cuts are healing up pretty good two weeks later, not too sore and good range around the thumb, but my left index finger is still sore, you can feel it on the golf swing. The cut is deep into the finger and not healing up very well but I don't have to keep a band aid on it 24 hrs anymore.
At Cochiti last Sat. either I hit the ball nicely or it went into the trees, every time that club pressed into the left hand it was a wince. Played the Great 28 (oh, I meant 46) didn't hurt the hand too bad this week so tomorrow at Towa won't have any excuses except for ineptitude.

new ping driver
thanks to my new/used ping rhapsody driver I was able to card a 96 at Marty on 7/31 (but figured in a tournament would need to add 5 to that score) so was happy playing with 3 friendly guys, Mike and 2 Joes from ABQ. foot didn't hurt at all, but played 9 holes at SFCC walking Sun and experienced a little aching on drive home.
am having fun with ebay and will look for some nifty woods to go with my nify driver

last week of July
It is amazing to state but my foot hardly hurts at all anymore, only when I put on a shoe that is a little tight across the toe box. Even hit some golf balls without pain this week, but my swing, that's another thing. going to go out and try again Sat.

saw the podiatrist
Went to see my old buddy Dr. Joel Wilner on Tuesday 7/20 and sure enough, toes are/were broken. You can see on the x-ray where the weight struck my left foot and rolled across the toes and where the toes were broken and yes, the little left pinky toe still has a nice straight line across, no wonder my foot hurts sometimes.
asked the doctor about treatment and I think I followed the correct instincts by not going in earlier - he would have put me in one of those walking boots and then everyone would want to know what happened, etc.
asked the golf pro about rolling out on the side of my foot on the swing and he said that was normal, not to worry.
actually, it hurts less this week than any other week so far but ironically it is hurting right now.

giving up
foot still hurts past my self-imposed deadline of July 4. Made an appointment with Dr. Wilner for next Tuesday. very disappointed in process.

4th of July deadline looms
When I dropped the weight plate on my foot I gave myself to July 4, telling myself I would be 100% by that time. Wish I was right. Now I have to decide to "soldier on" or to go to a doctor and have the foot inspected. Still hurts on the left pinky toe side of my foot, pinky toe still swollen and difficult to accomodate sandals and dressy shoes. What to do?
Had a great golf lesson this week, now the test will be on the course, will I be able to execute the instructions or fall back into bad habit? Playing at Aggie Golf on the 4th, will be a long and hot round!

week 6
It's exactly 6 weeks since I dropped the weight on my foot. I expected complete recovery but it's not totally healed yet. I still experience pain along the distal edge of my left foot and it is difficult to find shoes that fit comfortably. Hoping one more week will do the job and I can wear my white sandals comfortably!
Went up to Moab last week and noticed how much difference in pain levels I experienced from walking uphill vs downhill (downhill much worse). I could practically run up the sliprock but coming down took small, small steps.
Working out again though, can even do a step back lunge on the left leg without wincing, but no flexion with weight bearing yet.

4 weeks now
It's been exactly 4 weeks since I dropped the weight plate on my foot. The middle toes are looking almost normal and the bruising is almost gone, but the left pinky toe is still a problem. It's bright red and swollen and the shoes hurt the toe, but when I wear flip flops or sandals I have a problem bumping the foot, so I limp along. Interestingly enough, golf seems to aggravate it more than anything. Going to go out and wack 18 holes tomorrow though, got to keep going.

Golf and the Foot
Tried first 18 holes of calendar year this past Saturday and even took a cart. The pinky toe was not happy, swelled up and turned bright red. It is amazing how much you use the side of your foot to balance. I guess the weight shift didn't help the foot much either. Tried to practice a little Monday morning but that made the foot even worse. Went back on Aleve and trying to stay off it today.

One more week
Had a pretty good week, was able to walk without excessive pain on the foot and even did some hiking with the family. Last night did something stupid, was in my slippers and accidentally bumped my foot into the kitchen chair leg and that hurt! Lots of pain this morning and the red, swollen look reappeared on the toe. Taking some advil and trying to stay off it, am hoping this is just a few days set back. Going to play my first 18-holes of golf this calendar year tomorrow, probably will take a cart.

Another week of healing
Took a hike to Tent Rocks Tuesday, it's fun climbing in the magical rocks but the climb set me back a couple days, foot really throbbed and hurt bad on Wednesday. Walking is getting easier though but am not ready for the 16-mile canyon climb my Son wants to take Saturday.
Had the foot looked at by an orthopedic nurse who confirmed my suspicion of a broken bone, but nothing to do but try not to re-injure and let it heal up.

The Grandkids are Coming!
My oldest son and his family are arriving today from Boston. 2 adults and 2 children, one toddler and one infant. Got 2 cribs and a high chair set up, youngest son and his daughter arrive Sat. We're having a birthday party, wonder which child will have the melt-down? Forgot to mention another 2 pre-schoolers in the mix!
How Long Will It Last
How long will the foot be sore? I teach yoga and yesterday had a reinforcement of the importance of weighting the foot evenly - couldn't balance when I had to due to injury. The pinky toe side of the left foot is trashed. Was able to walk the dogs today.
Anyone else trash their foot like this? Am I looking at 6 weeks of pain?

Diary of a dropped weight plate
How in the world can someone drop a 5-pound weight plate on their foot? Well I did it and the process has been interesting. Sharp, stabbing pain resulted in hours of ice, the next two days couldn't put any weight on it at all. Should I go to the doctor? Decided not to.
